Reward

What does reward means to you? Today I receive a reward from my client. It is not a new deal. It is not a referral from them. It is not a lucrative contract. It is none of the above but it means more than any of the above.

In January when the owner of Frost Wine first contacted me, we are confirming the quotation and receiving the brief of their project. Next come the long period of amendments and mock ups that was done with many delays as the work flow get stuck. Today is the concluding day for the project as the site is finally launched and the client wants us to do another design for them. I told them that their current images for the design are not satisfactory and offered to photograph images of their wine bottle for them in good resolution. What we have expected is that they didn’t refuse the extra mile we put in for them but what we didn’t expect is the reward that they have given us.

After taking the photo, my client said “The 2 bottles of wines are for you for the effort you put in to our web site, please savor it with your colleagues” This is the reward that I am talking about. It is not the payment for the job as payment is a fair exchange for the service we have rendered to them. The 2 bottles of wine symbolize appreciation of the work that we have done for them. No doubt they are not very cheap wines but it is not the dollar value of the wine that matters, it is the intrinsic value of the wine that counts.

Left: My Reward and I (Please ignore the extra behind the screeen ^^)

Being in business for close to 1 and a half year, this is the first time that I felt rewarded for the dedication that I have put in to service my client. They have rewarded me not only monetary but also rewarded me with 2 bottles of wine that carries more significant meaning to the term “reward”. This is one of the little things that people can do that to make you know that your effort is worth it. 2 bottles of wine have made my day and let me know that my client actually appreciates my service and go out of the way to reward me. They didn’t treat my service as something that is part of the work scope reflected on the numbers on the cheque, it is an extra value to them as they see the dedication from my company.

These go to show 2 points
1- The reward of your toil will materialize some day, you just have to persevere and believe that your work will one day be appreciated
2- Don’t treat other people’s extra effort for granted. Reward or compliment them if they have go the extra mile for you and you have done a good deed by validating their effort. A pat at the back is always a good motivation and reward for people who deserve it.

So the morale of the story is

“Work hard and go the extra mile as the extra mile is usually the place that is filled with rainbows”
